Almondbury School
Dwellings Almondbury, Huddersfield 1997
This project involved the sensitive conversion of a former school building that had stood vacant for several years. Located within a conservation area, the design centred on the removal of the central assembly hall to create a landscaped courtyard, while the surrounding classrooms were thoughtfully adapted into a mix of 2, 3, and 4 bedroom homes.
During demolition, large areas of original glazed brickwork were uncovered. These bricks were carefully salvaged, cleaned, and repurposed within the new courtyard walls, adding texture and a tangible connection to the site’s educational past.
The completed scheme was well received and went on to be shortlisted for the RIBA Housing Awards.
